Nawfel
Excellent guitarists now run to large numbers in France, whatever the genre they choose to play in, electric blues from Chicago or Texas, classical, rock, jazz, fusion... France can even lay claim to a new, entirely original tradition, thanks to Django and his numerous heirs. One has to admit that the record companies have recorded and re-mastered the great masters, and that specialist magazines have published the tablatures and scores, not to mention all the videocassettes, lessons and master-classes that exist. All of which does little to explain the arrival from another planet of a UFO by the name of Nawfel, who landed in Soissons (north of Paris), and then went on to K.O. the public at the Printemps de Bourges Festival. He went to Chicago 2 years ago, just to see what was happening locally, and today he is just back from Los Angeles, with the most amazing record heard for a long time.

Walid Rouissi
In Vienna the Tunisian singer Walid Rouissi has created a modern hybrid style based on two totally different worlds of music. Afro-Arabic rhythm serves as the bases, combined with European sound, producing a new kind of "Dance Music". Not authentic RAI as he says himself, but a mixture of Reggae, Folklore and Jeel music. The origin of his music is found in Calypso and various Arabic-African as well as Latin-American music forms. Inusing different kinds of melodies and by not allowing himself to lose sight of his Arabic musical roots, his music remains impressive. Walid Rouissi has taken on many activities in the music business. Some of these activities included playing his new wave music for festivals all over Tunisia, these festivals are undertaken every year of which groups from many parts of the world come to play. He also did a variety of performances in Austria, France, Yugoslavia, Holland and Germany for which they were all very successful

Amina
The Tunisian singer Amina, who rose to fame on the back of the world music explosion in the 1980's, has become a symbol of successful 'metissage', fusing her traditional Arab roots with modern Western dance styles. Amina Annabi was born in Carthage, Tunisia, on 5 March 1962. Her parents (French father, Tunisian mother) got divorced while she was still in her early childhood, so Amina was brought up by her mother, a talented musician and composer. Amina was surrounded by music from an early age. Indeed, growing up in Carthage, a veritable melting pot of different styles and cultures, the young girl soon developed an extremely eclectic approach. (Amina's musical tastes ranged from Tina Turner to the legendary Egyptian diva Oum Kalthoum!) Amina's grandmother was also a talented musician and on Sundays the family would often get together at her house to sing a mix of traditional 'Malouf' and Italian variety hits. Mounir Troudi

Anouar Brahem was born on October 1957, in Halfaouine, in the center of Tunis' Medina. Positively supported by his father, he starts introduction to music and especially to lute at the age of 10. He studies then in the Tunis National Music Conservatory. In the meantime, he is tought during 10 years by the great Master Ali Sitri, and gets through him a deep knowledge of traditional arabian music. Step by step, his curiosity pushes him to listen to other musical expressions: mediteranean musics, Iran, India, and Jazz. His musical surroudings are basically and widely dominated by popular songs in which lute has only a side instrument place. Thus, Anouar Brahem's name is tightly attached to instrumental music more than popular songs: from the beginning, he considers that lute is a quite important instrument within arabian music, and he wants to give lute his nobel place within the musical context. For this reason and because he feels passionated by his instrument, he started performing solo concerts very soon. http://www.anouarbrahem.com
